SQL Server 2022 is Now Generally Available
The biggest announcement to come out of this year’s PASS Summit is the news that SQL Server 2022 is now Generally Available. In the announcement, Microsoft had this to say:
“SQL Server 2022 is a core element of the Microsoft Intelligent Data Platform. The platform seamlessly integrates operational databases, analytics, and data governance. This enables customers to adapt in real-time, add layers of intelligence to their applications, unlock fast and predictive insights, and govern their data—wherever it resides”.
Some SQL Server 2022 highlights include:
- Pay-as-you-go billing options (we cover this more in the next section)
- Connections to Azure Synapse Link and Microsoft Purview
- Managed disaster recovery to Azure SQL Managed instance
- Near real-time analytics capabilities
- Built-in query intelligence
- Ledger for SQL Server
Pay-as-you-go SQL Server 2022 Licensing

JP Chen, Global Director and Senior Practice Lead of SQL Server, was particularly excited about the Pay-as-you-go license for SQL Server 2022. Now you’re able to access a cloud billing model even for your on-premises SQL Server databases, giving your organization another way to reduce capital expenses and better manage your SQL Server license costs.
SQL Server on AWS
AWS also got in on the SQL Server announcements. You can now use cross-Region read replicas with Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS) for SQL Server. Get more details in the announcement post.
Another useful Amazon RDS for SQL Server announcement came a bit earlier in November, and now supports access to transaction log backups. This is helpful for setting up Point-in-Time recovery or replication. Read more about it.
Get a Musical Introduction to SQL Server 2022 by KillaDBA
We had the pleasure of meeting the massively talented KillaDBA, who combines his DBA skills with his spectacular musical talent. Just listen to his SQL Server 2022 song and you’ll see why we’re so hyped about him.
We Talked About the Past, Present, and Future of DBAs and SQL Server on AWS at PASS Data Community Summit 2022

I was thrilled to moderate the panel Where We’ve Come From, Where We’re Going, where we explored the evolving role of the DBA, featuring the insights of senior DBAs and database leadership derived from working in thousands of database environments across all industries.
Panelists included:
- JP Chen – Senior Director SQL Server, Datavail
- Justin Azevedo – Senior DBA, Datavail
- Argenis Fernandez – Principal Program Manager, Azure Database Platform, Microsoft
- Yogi Barot – Microsoft Specialist Principal Solution Architect, AWS

Suyog had a great time presenting Migrating to Amazon RDS for SQL Server and gave a deep dive on the essentials of AWS services required for on-premises SQL Server migrations to Amazon RDS for SQL Server, and how to perform the migration.

JP spent some time with our partner AWS, presenting Fast Pass for Migrating SQL Server to AWS at their booth. He covered the options available for migrating SQL Server to AWS, as well as key considerations and an overview of the process.
